What is the most common book found in households in America today? That would probably be the telephone directory, commonly called the phone book. It used to be a good resource for looking up someone's phone number. It is still good for that if the number in question belongs to a land line phone. Unfortunately, it does not contain cell phone numbers. This can be a problem these days in that many people only have a cell phone. Fortunately, on the World Wide Web it is possible to find a totally free cell phone directory.
There are a number of web sites that can do cell phone number look ups. One can find a bunch of them by going to Google and searching for free cell phone directory. There are a number of services that they provide, though not every site provides all services. The user should be cautious when using these services as not all of them are free.
The most basic search is, given a person's name and city, find a cell phone number for that person. Some sites that do this search access a database that contains information for people who have voluntarily registered their phone numbers. For non-registered cell phones many sites will forward the request to a pay site. Thus, unfortunately, in many cases either the phone number is not found or it is not free.
Reverse searches are also available. These usually ask for a phone number and return information about the owner of the phone. In most cases, only very limited information, such as the city of the owner, is free. Other information, possibly even including the name, is only available for a fee.
So, are they really totally free? They can be in some cases. If you access a site that uses a database and the person you are looking for has entered their phone info, then you can probably get it for no charge. If you are doing a reverse search and don't need much information, that is probably free too. Just about anything else is not free.
